  • James Ruane’s photoblog – London wedding photographer

I'm 34, a full time professional wedding photographer based in London with a simple passion - taking amazing pictures of people! My style goes against the overly posed feel often associated with wedding pictures and is more modern, natural, fun and sometimes even a little bit quirky.

I didn't start life as a wedding photographer and spent several years working in PR for some of London's hottest consultancies managing everything from photoshoots to events for some of the world's best-known brands like Starbucks and British Airways.

Although I'm based in central London, I will travel anywhere in the UK to photograph your wedding, whether its a classical country affair or chic urban wedding.

So if you're looking for a contemporary wedding photographer who's young and fresh, with a bubbly personality and a creative and modern photography style then me or call me on 07879 478315 for a friendly chat. You can also visit my website for more information.

Wedding photography top tips

Photographing your first few weddings can be a daunting task. Its one of life’s little moments that is sure to give you a few butterflies, but fear not help is at hand. I thought it was about time that I offered some practical suggestions to get through your first few weddings, especially for the aspiring amateur photographer. Whilst all of these tips might not work for everyone, it’s a winning formula that helps me to photograph 40+ weddings per year.

1. Get to know your clients

Try and hold a consultation meeting with your client early on to find out everything you can about their photography aspirations. This will pay dividends on the wedding day, as you’ll be much better prepared and clearer about what your client wants and how you’ll deliver it.

2. The pre-wedding shoot

Gimmick or a nice to do! I am a massive fan of pre-wedding shoots, so much so that I will probably write another blog about it soon! A pre-wedding shoot is a few hours informal photography a couple of months before the wedding day with your couple. If you hold it at their wedding venue, then what better way to scout all the locations you’ll be shooting at in a few months time! I find it really helpful to find four to five postcard settings that will make beautiful pictures on the day. It’s also a great way to get to know your couples and make them feel more at ease with you.

Central London wedding

I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Smriti and Will on 15th January 2011, a lovely Indian and American couple in central London. This was one of three weddings the couple were having in addition to the US and Indian!

The couple wanted iconic shots of London using some of the city’s most well know buildings like the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye as backdrops.

With the wedding at 2pm, unusually I met the couple before their ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall, to make the best of all available light. We spent 2 hours in Victoria Park Gardens a cute little park tucked away behind the Houses of Parliament, which offered lots of stunning photo opportunities.

Smriti and will were fantastic, even though it was a brisk winter’s day they kept smiling all morning and we had lots of fun and came away with some great photos.

Enjoy the gallery and don’t forget to leave any posts or comments with your favourites!

Carla & Wesley pre-wedding shoot

I had the pleasure of photographing my first pre-wedding shoot of December with the lovely Carla and Wesley.

They are a really lovely couple and are getting married on January 21st 2011 in Canterbury [one of my two weddings in January alone] so make sure you look out for my blog posting at the end of next month.

We took the pre-wedding shots at Carla and Wesley’s venue - Chilston Park Hotel. Now this place is quintessentially English! Its a 17th century manor house full of quirky little antiques and classical paintings and as you’d expect lots of open log fires, which makes it feel very homely.

Perhaps the ‘pierre de la resistance’ is the grand stairwell, which is a photographers dream! Outside the house is flanked by acres of beautiful countryside, a huge lake and a very long tree lined driveway! I am going to be spoilt for choice.

I’ve been getting so many enquiries lately, where I’ve been chatting to people about the importance of pre-wedding shoots so I feel the need to endorse them again, incase you are reading this and thinking do I really need one. The answer is unequivocally yes!

It is a great way to get to know your photographer and build up a rapport. Not only that but it helps you to feel more comfortable in-front of the camera, so when it comes to your wedding day you’ll feel much more relaxed with your photographer and get more of those smiley, relaxed images you want!

It’s also a brilliant way (provided you can carry this out at the wedding venue) to find all the best picture spots in advance, which will save time on the day.

See what you think for yourself and if you like the images leave a comment.

Thanks

James
